Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection includes three classic Metal Gear games:

Metal Gear Solid

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence
  • Relive history as the cold war and geo-political landscape change.
  • Outsmart enemies with camouflage, close-quarters combat, stalking, interrogating, climbing, hunting and treating injuries.

5 out of 5 stars Same games but....   August 19, 2010

Awesome series worth buying but if you have saves from old games you owned before they wont load with this and you need a PSX memory card to save for MGS1.

I have no clue but obviously must be good if the person I bought it for wanted the whole series. They've been playing since they were little and love the whole plot line and used to spend hours telling me all about it. So there you go.

I ordered the games on a Friday, and I got them on the next Wednesday, which was two days before the estimated arrival. Shipping was fine. As far as the games go, I think they are great, considering the time that they were made in. As far as PS1 games go, Metal Gear Solid is pretty good. I just started yesterday, and I can honestly say that I've never played a PS1 game that was better than it. As for the MGS2 and MGS3, I'm hoping to get around to them in a week or two, but I'm confident that they will also live up to their expectations. I only bought these games because I have MGS4, and wanted to know what the whole plot was, and so that I could sell them after. But now that I have them, I think I'll actually keep the games. They are fun, exciting, and I think that the Metal Gear Solid series is one of the best ever made.

5 out of 5 stars MGS collection   July 12, 2010
MGS Fan
This is one of the best collection of games that I've bought. It has the best music/gameplay. The graphics in Metal gear 1 are a little shady but the rest great. You get Metal gear solid in two disc original ps0ne format plus manual. Metal gear 2 and 3 in Special edition. I bought it for $20.00 at wal-mart but Its pricey on Amazon. If you are a fan of Metal Gear Solid or thinking of playing the game you shoud get this Collection.

5 out of 5 stars MGS Essentials Overview   June 27, 2010
Ian
No Persistence disc means no win for me. I am a HUGE MGS fan and I have the collection in my stock right now (Metal Gear Solid on PSN), Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. To me, the Persistence disc in Subsistence is a win for me! I got the collector's edition of MGS3, too, that includes the "Existance" CD that features MGS3 in a Director's Cut 3-hour length film by Hideo Kojima. Being a huge story fan and MGS fan, I show people the Existence disc to show them how powerful and moving the MGS storyline is! To me, having all those discs is being a true MGS fan. If you do not own all of them, then you are missing out. However, for people who are new to the series and probably don't care about all the extra fun-bags that go around with owning an MGS title, the Collections is necessary to have. If you have a PS3 (which you should) with backwards compatibality, you can play the Essentials on there with virtual Memory Cards that have unlimited space.

Essentials is essential, but the one draw back is the absence of the Persistence disc in MGS3: Subsistence. The Persistence disc also included MG1 and MG2 from the MSX era that are pivotal to the MGS Universe. Like I said, being an MGS fan first, and collections agency second, I do miss the features they've cut out of the Essentials expansion pack. However, by all means, if this is your first time playing the MGS series, and want to lead up to MGS4, Essentials will do. If you are looking for the Ultimate Expansion Pack of MGS titles, look up Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence on Ebay or Amazon and buy that copy!
