Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories bridges the gap between the original Kingdom Hearts and the sequel, Kingdom Hearts II. Chain of Memories from Square Enix for the Sony PlayStation 2 is a complete 3D remake of the original Game Boy Advance release from 2004. This "bridge" installment was released in Japan in 2007 as part of the Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix+ compilation before finally making its way to North America. Combined with the card battle system of the original Game Boy Advance release, Chain of Memories for PS2 presents Kingdom Hearts fans with an entirely new gameplay experience.

The Prologue
The story begins with Sora, Donald and Goofy wandering through endless fields. Eventually, they come to a crossroad. Standing in the crossroads, Sora gazes up at the night sky and thinks of his lost friends.

From the distance, a mysterious man approaches from one of the roads. "Ahead lies something you need," he says, "but to claim it you must lose something dear." The man vanishes, revealing a single path that leads to the eery Castle Oblivion, which resembles a girl's drawing.

The Story
After this encounter, Sora, Donald, and Goofy go their separate ways. Soon, on a night when his island home is besieged by a mysterious storm, Sora is whisked away to an unfamiliar burg known as Traverse Town. There he meets Donald and Goofy, and learns that there are strange things happening in the world.

Donald and Goofy set off to look for their missing king, and Sora joins them to search for his lost friend, Riku. After a long journey that takes them across numerous worlds, Sora and friends finally find Riku and the lost king. But to save all the worlds, Sora must use his Keyblade to close the door to darkness, even though Riku and the king are on the other side. Believing the king's parting words -- there will always be a door to the light -- Sora locks the door, and the trio sets out on yet another journey.

The Characters
The cast of Chain of Memories combines Kingdom Hearts characters with familiar Disney faces. Sora, is a 14-year-old boy and the hero of this tale. Although a little naive, Sora has an uncommon sense of justice. On his journey, Sora is accompanied by Donald, a court wizard who shares a striking resemblance to Donald the Duck of Disney fame, and the clumsy, easy-going captain of the Disney Castle Royal Knights, Goofy.

Other characters include the mysterious, shrouded man from the crossroads; Sora's lost friend, Riku, a 15-year-old boy who is cool and collected; the lost King, who bares a striking resemblance to Mickey Mouse; and Kairi, a 14-year-old girl who's friends with Sora and Riku. Almost more strange than the man at the crossroads, a mysterious girl, Namine, draws pictures inside Castle Oblivion under close surveillance of an evil organization. As the story alludes, she may hold the key to Sora's most special memories.

I know someone who works at Zia Records so i trusted them already, But the fact that this game was used and not damaged at all, I gained a new respect for them.

5 out of 5 stars Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories........   August 30, 2010
blackaciddevil (in the USA somewhere.....)
Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories is, essentially, a 3D remake of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories that was released on the Gameboy Advance. It was released as a standalone title here in North America but was originally the second disc of Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix+ in Japan.

The game itself starts off exactly where the first game ends. Upon which, Sora and the gang follow a mysterious man(whom we find out later on is part of Organization XIII) into Castle Oblivion. Sora is given a card and is told that "The more you find out, the more you lose.". That's, basically, where the game begins. What makes this game different than the other game is the fact that when you're in battle you use cards to make your moves. There are cards for attacks, magic, combos, etc. These cards can temporarily run out, so to replenish them you have to charge them. If you completely run out of cards during your battle, you can't continue fighting. Like other card games(Yu-Gi-Oh, Magic:The Gathering); you collect cards, make decks to use, drop cards that are of no use to you, or combine them to make more powerful cards. Some cards unlock certain rooms to help progress you through the game. Some cards take you to rooms that hold valuable treasure. When you level up, you have a choice of either having more HP, being able to hold more cards or learning newer abilites. What you do is completely up to you. Yet, be warned-gamer, Strategy is the key to this game so choose your cards wisely. As in Yu-Gi-Oh or Magic:The Gathering; the cards you choose could work for you or completely against you. Once you learn that one thing, beating the game is fairly easy. You'll end up wishing there was more to the game once it is done. Course, lol, there is more to the game as you get to play through the story as Riku but you start the process all over again and play through the same scenarios. Still, playing the card game is awesome.

Honestly, though, the only thing I loved about Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories was the fact that it was done in 3-D and the few extras they added onto the game such as the "Reaction Command" function from Kingdom Hearts II and new cutscenes and battles that weren't in the original game. Otherwise, I prefer the Gameboy Advance version better. Least, with that version, you can carry it around with you and play on the go.

Do I think it is worthy of getting? Oh, Definitely. Don't let certain reviewers here stop you from making a purchase just because they couldn't get into it. The same might not hold true for you. If you like card games, you're bound to like this game.

This game is terrible. I played the first Kingdom Hearts, and LOVED it. Kingdom Hearts 2 was good too, but this one doesn't even come close.

Seriously, what were the creators thinking? The card-based battle system is frustrating. The bosses are extremely hard. When you run out of cards, you have to reload them, which leaves you open to enemy attacks.

The story isn't good either, or the character development. If anything it felt like they were ruining their characters. Especially Sora. It didn't feel like a Kingdom Hearts game.

And honestly, you don't need this game to understand what took place between the first two. Kingdom Hearts 2 does a good job explaining itself, without having to go through this. This just isn't worth your time or money.

4 out of 5 stars Cards are annoying.   July 29, 2010
Toni
The draw back of this game is that it is card based unlike the other Kingdom Hearts. Having to fight by the power of a card gets quite annoying. You also travel alone and only get help when you receive a friend card during battle Although the game is card based the storyline is fantastic and you get to travel to the same places traveled in the first Kingdom Hearts. You also get to play as Riku instead of Sora after finishing Sora's story. Overall the game is pretty fun but would be better with out a card based system.
